This small building provides a students union bar facility together with a supporting function room and TV lounge. Although one of the Practice’s earliest projects we feel that the design continues to stand the test of time in its approach to sustainable design through the selection of materials, natural lighting and ventilation.

The design of the new facility was evolved in close consultation with the student representatives and turned an under utilised area of the campus into a focal point for both internal and external activities.

The roof uses a hybrid steel and timber umbrella structure to allow plane timber members to be used rather than laminated sections. The copper roof and gutter have a carefully crafted appearance with chains being used to direct water down to a pebble filled area in the external paving. The sunken snug area within the bar has a wood burning stove that uses timber from the campus.
