Baxter College

Completed: 2009
Client: Worcestershire County Council

This project involved the amalgamation of two adjacent schools to form a larger single secondary school. Work included the refurbishment of food technology rooms, science labs and the creation of two new art rooms in an open courtyard.

The art rooms, which are illustrated here, needed to be designed so that their principal construction elements could be craned into position due to their land locked location in the heart of the school. They are designed to make maximum use of natural light, with dramatic northlights and top lit alcoves to the main rooms and an elliptical roof light to the entrance display area. The rooms are naturally ventilated using a combination of high level opening windows and fan assisted stack ventilators powered by photovoltaic cells.
